Short Bio

He served as the Prime Minister of Japan from 2006 to 2007 & 2012 to 2020, becoming the nation’s longest serving Prime Minister. Upon his first confirmation to the position in September of 2006, Abe became the youngest prime minister in post World War II Japanese history.

His first stint in power was brief, lasting only one year before his unexpected resignation stemming from medical issues. Six years later the Liberal Democratic Party swept the General Election, gaining 294 seats in the Diet.

Abe became the first former Japanese Prime Minister in over 64 years to accomplish a return to power. The subsequent two general elections further cemented his party’s control over the country’s legislature.

During his lengthy term in office, Abe served as a voice for strengthening conservative policies. His economic plan, dubbed by economists as, “Abenomics,” called for both government fueled injection of money into the economy and the use of International Monetary Fund loans to help kickstart the stalled Japanese economy.

In addition to his tough economic stance, Abe proved to be a “hard-liner” in his stance against North Korea.

He played a critical role in the genesis of the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue. The so called “Quad” serves as a system of security talks held between the United States, Japan, India, and Australia.

Lambasted by some as the, “Asian Nato,” the “Quad” sought to improve military and diplomatic standing between the members of the dialogue, all in an attempt to push back against perceived Chinese military and political aggression in the Pacific region. Following a record breaking tenure in office, on August 28, 2020 Abe announced his second resignation in light of a recurrence of medical issues which hindered his ability to perform the duties of the office.

During the early morning of July 8, 2022, he was assassinated by Tetsuya Yamagami whilst making a campaign speech in Nara.
