He was a key player in the success of the 1969 Mets team, which won the World Championship. After retiring as a player, he continued to contribute to the sport as a coach and manager.
He was the only person to participate in both of the Mets’ World Series championships and appeared in the first three World Series for the team. Furthermore, he was the only person in Mets franchise history to have appeared in four playoff seasons.
He was inducted into the Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame in the Baseball category with the Class of 1992. He passed away at the age of 79 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
