Scottish actor Brian McCardie, known for his portrayal of Liam Neeson’s younger brother in Michael Caton-Jones’ historical drama “Rob Roy,” has passed away at the age of 59. His sister Sarah announced his sudden death at home on Sunday, describing him as a remarkable actor who passionately embraced his craft and touched many lives.

Born on January 22, 1965, and hailing from near Glasgow, McCardie began his career with a role on the BBC soap opera EastEnders. He later portrayed gang lord turned police informant Tommy Hunter in the initial two seasons of the BBC drama Line of Duty (2012-2014). His recent appearances in British series include Time, Crime, The Tower, Domina, and the miniseries Rebellion.

Renowned for his poignant portrayal of Alasdair MacGregor in Rob Roy (1995), alongside Jessica Lange, McCardie received praise for his emotional depth.
His film credits encompassed diverse roles, including Scottish soccer legend Dave Mackay in The Damned United (2009), alongside Michael Sheen as Leeds United coach Brian Clough. He also appeared in Speed 2: Cruise Control (1997), 200 Cigarettes (1999), Low Winter Sun (2006), Filth (2013), Ghosts (2014), Caton-Jones’ Our Ladies (2019), and Damaged (2024).
